A folk guitar refers to the guitar that plays folk music. Basically, a folk guitar usually means a steel string acoustic guitar today.

However, talking about folk guitar still makes musicians and fans thinking about a specialized guitar for a certain music style. But it is not necessary to think that way. WE have seen an Acoustic Guitar with electric systems, etc. As long as you get the tone that you love, it’s all good.

Therefore, there are plenty of acoustic guitar models for option to play folk music. However, there are two things that we still need to think about when talking about folk guitar. Thus, mid-sized or mid-large sized acoustic guitar maybe a good option. So guitar with GA, D body, etc. should be your choice.

For material, Acoustic Body with Spruce top and Mahogany back and side will do this. Once you prefer something mellower, an all Mahogany acoustic guitar maybe a good choice.

If you prefer complete acoustic, an acoustic guitar with larger body should be the first choice. Jumbo guitar or grand jumbo guitar will greatly help.

We know that some musicians prefer nylon string guitar to play folk music. But if you are a beginner, it is better to play with steel string guitar as start.

Is Folk Guitar Special?

As mentioned above, you are free to use what you like. In fact, there is no instrument specialized as folk guitar. So, try testing different guitars as you want.  

However, it is better to try the balanced acoustic guitar as mentioned at the beginning. There are many perform better in folk music.

Although it is not so proper to take folk guitar as synonym for acoustic guitar, they are firmly associated.
