Custom Guitar Fret Markers, Are They Essential?
Why Use Guitar Fret Markers?
Fret markers are inlays on the fretboard.
Although it is said that the fret markers are used for the measurement of the scale length, we think it is more related with the tradition of acoustic guitar building.
Besides, since the markers help to count the positions, they are also called position markers. That gives convenience to guitarists to orientate themselves on the neck.
Many thought that the fret markers have impact on the tone performance. But we don’t find any evidence to prove that. On the contrary, we found that to inlay the fret markers provides a great chance to make unique appeal of guitar.
In this article, we are trying to go through the material, designation, functionality, etc., to explain why the parts are frequently mentioned in the requirement when custom acoustic guitars.
Material, Design & Functionality
The markers are frequently made of abalone, ABS, celluloid, wood, etc.
Normally, which material will be used is mainly based on the economic consideration. Abalone markers are usually be found on the fretboard of high-class acoustic guitars. By natural gloss and texture, it contributes to promote the sense of quality of the guitar.
ABS and celluloid markers are also very common. Acoustic guitars with this type of markers often stand for cheaper cost.
Wood markers are also applied on some expensive guitars. For decorative function, it is usually used along with stickers.
Traditionally, the fret markers are designed as dots. As time goes by, various designations appeared. We think this may be related with the improvement of cutting technology. Nowadays, various patterns like flowers, animals and very unique ones are designed. Thus, dots design is not a standard of shape.
As mentioned, the fret markers are mainly decorative elements today. The main function is to catch the eyes. And although there are many thoughts that the markers influence the sound, no evidence can prove that. Because those inlays are very thin (approximately 2mm). Even if they have any impact, our ears cannot tell the difference.
Here is still a debate that classical guitars typically don’t have any markers on the neck. This is interesting. But in our opinion, this is related with the history and practicing requirement of classical guitar. Classical instrument like violin, doesn’t apply any fret markers, too. Because when they were born, there was no such kind of concept of “position”. The guitarists are required to practice to feel and remember the positions, looking at the fretting hand when playing is not so normal. Thus, the markers are not so common. But nowadays, we frequently find side dots on the sides of classical guitar neck to provide visual reference.
